Tips to Repel Insects Naturally

Spending time outdoors is beneficial for our overall well-being, but it can be spoiled by pesky bugs that require bug repellent. However, conventional sprays are full of chemicals that have been proven dangerous with continuous use. If you’re looking for natural bug repellent tips to keep insects at bay, here are a few options to consider.

Be aware of health considerations and allergic reactions. Do not rub anything on your skin before speaking with your doctor. This blog is not meant to diagnose or treat any type of medical condition or illness.

Essential Oils: Many essential oils have insect-repellent properties. Some effective options include citronella, lemongrass, lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree oil. You can dilute these oils with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or jojoba oil, and apply them to your skin or clothing. Alternatively, you can add a few drops of essential oil to a spray bottle filled with water and use it as a repellent spray.

Herbal Repellents: Certain herbs possess natural bug-repelling properties. You can plant these herbs in your garden or use them in various forms to repel insects. Examples include basil, lemongrass, rosemary, mint, and lavender. Crushing the leaves or rubbing them on your skin can release their natural oils and help keep bugs away.

Citrus Peels: Citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and grapefruits can be effective against certain insects. Rubbing the peels directly on your skin or leaving them in areas where bugs gather, such as windowsills or outdoor seating areas, can act as a deterrent.

Vinegar: Vinegar has multiple uses, including repelling insects. Create a solution of equal parts vinegar and water and use it as a spray in areas where bugs are a problem. Vinegar can repel ants, mosquitoes, and fruit flies, among others.

Garlic: The strong scent of garlic can repel mosquitoes and other insects. You can crush garlic cloves and mix them with water to create a spray. Apply it to your skin, clothing, or outdoor areas to discourage bugs.

Plants: Certain plants have inherent bug-repelling properties. Placing them in your garden or around your home can help deter insects. Examples include marigolds, catnip, basil, rosemary, and lavender. Planting these flowers and herbs in your garden can naturally discourage pests.

Proper Clothing: Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks can provide a physical barrier against insects. Opt for light-colored clothing and avoid wearing perfumes or strongly scented products that may attract bugs.

Or, try making this natural bug spray:

1/2 cup witch hazel
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
40 drops essential oil (eucalyptus, lemongrass, citronella, tea tree or rosemary)
8-ounce glass spray bottle

Mix witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, and essential oils in spray bottle. Spray this over all portions of the body but avoid getting in your eyes or mouth.

Remember that natural bug repellents may not be as potent or long-lasting as chemical-based repellents. It’s important to reapply them more frequently and consider additional measures like mosquito nets, screens, or environmental modifications to reduce bug populations in your surroundings.
